Method: TCF Canada Oral Expression

The Oral Expression test (expression orale) is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, in French. It lasts about 12 minutes and has three tasks of increasing difficulty. You are not expected to be perfect: what is assessed is your ability to communicate, interact and defend an idea.

The format

TaskWhat you are asked to doPreparationDuration
1Guided interview: talk about yourselfNone2 min
2Interaction: get information2 min3 min 30
3Point of view: defend an opinionNone4 min 30

The mark is out of 20 and converts into an NCLC.

The assessment criteria

  • Vocabulary: suitable and varied words, without unnecessary repetition.
  • Grammar: correct and increasingly complex sentences.
  • Pronunciation: understandable pronunciation and a steady pace.
  • Interaction: respond to the situation, react to the examiner, keep the exchange going.

Strategy for each task

  1. Task 1: prepare a natural introduction in advance (identity, family, studies, work, hobbies, plans in Canada). Don't recite it: the examiner will interrupt you with questions.
  2. Task 2: during the 2 minutes of preparation, note down about ten varied questions (price, opening hours, conditions, place, arrangements). During the exchange, listen to the answers and follow up.
  3. Task 3: state your opinion clearly, give two or three arguments with concrete examples, then conclude. Also consider the opposite view to add nuance.

On exam day

  • Speak clearly, without rushing: a short silence is better than a muddled sentence.
  • If you don't understand, ask the examiner to repeat (« Pouvez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît ? »): it is a skill being assessed.
  • Use connectors (« d'abord », « ensuite », « par exemple », « en revanche », « finalement »).
  • Look at the examiner and stay engaged until the end.

Practising with Palier

Choose a topic of the month, start the practice timer (preparation, then speaking), speak out loud in French while recording yourself on your phone, then compare with the samples. Tick “Worked on” to track your progress.
